The above Trane furnace model numbers can be decoded to reveal specific technical information about the furnaces. Specifically, this is based on the model number. Furnace Serial Number Can Reveal Furnace Year of Manufacture

Alternately, there is a handy webpage that shows how to decode HVAC appliance serial numbers to determine the year of manufacture. Go to http://www.building-center.org and select the appliance type, and the letter that the appliance brand begins with. Then locate the brand in question from the drop down menu. And a list will be available with a variety of serial number formats that the particular brand uses. The location of the year embedded in the serial number is identified.
If your current furnace is 15 years old or older and is rated as an 80% furnace, then upgrading to a new Trane S-series 80% furnace will provide noticeable energy savings over your older furnace. This is partly due to the different way that furnace efficiency is rated today versus the way furnace efficiency was rated 15 years ago. In the past, the older furnace efficiency rating was based on bringing the furnace up to normal operating temperature and then measuring the furnace efficiency. Instead, the current method of rating the energy efficiency of the furnace is to begin calculating furnace efficiency when the furnace is started. Basically, this is because the furnace does not run as efficient upon initial startup, before the furnace components are at an optimum temperature for optimum combustion efficiency.
